Dr. Schulz treats people with acne scars, melasma, discoloration from and other pigmented lesions using a top of the line laser designed to treat these conditions with minimal discomfort. The Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser is the ideal treatment tool for treatment of dark brown pigment spots such as birthmarks and sun spots. The Q-switched lasers can also be used to remove unwanted tattoos.

The laser targets darkly pigmented tissue, whether this is due to melanin or dye, and leaves lighter tissues unaffected. Some pigmented areas may require multiple treatments for the full removal, however each treatment will show significant improvement.

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a skin condition that is characterized by irregular patches of pigmentation on the face. This pigmentation is due to overproduction of melanin by the melanocytes, which is taken up by the epidermal cells and/or deposited in the dermis. It is a fairly common condition that is found more often in females.

The cause of melasma is not fully understood, but the following factors are considered to play a part in the formation of these patches:

  • Hormonal changes such as in pregnancy and the use of oral contraceptives.
  • Genetics
  • Sun exposure & sun damage
  • Certain medications
  • Hypothyroidism

Melasma has no known association with internal disease as some skin conditions do.

Dr. Schulz is trained in laser aesthetics and also tattoo removal.
