Why Should I Use Only Professional Grade Supplements?

Most people do not give much thought to the purchase of their nutritional supplements, assuming they are all basically the same. However, the quality of dietary supplements varies tremendously from manufacturer to manufacturer. Unfortunately, many products are not what they are represented to be.

Things to consider when purchasing supplements:

#1 Allergies and Sensitivities:  Because there is no governing body currently regulating supplements the way they regulate pharmaceuticals there is the increased likelihood of ingredient cross-contamination, the use of allergy-triggering additives and fillers, GMO products, or even pesticides and other toxins sneaking into your over the counter supplement. Using companies with strict quality control and the practice of outsourcing their product for additional testing to confirm purity and quality are vital.  Most professional grade supplements are produced hypoallergenic for even the most sensitive patients.  No nutritional supplements should contain potentially allergenic fillers, binders, or lubricants.

#2 Absorption: Professional grade products contain no lubricants made of ingredients that can prevent you from absorbing the active nutrients. Lubricants enable tableting and capsulizing machines to run more efficiently, but these large fat molecules can prevent the product from dissolving in your digestive tract. Good for the machines – not necessarily good for you. You may not absorb the product or receive its benefits. Large fatty acid additives in this category include stearic acid and its cousins, magnesium stearate and calcium stearate. These lubricants have similar negative properties – reduced dissolution and inhibited absorption.

#3 Quality: Physician grade supplements are reliably tested for quality and freshness of any herbs that are used.  Some vitamins are more easily absorbed and utilized in the body vs other forms of the same vitamin.  For example, iron citrate is much more easily absorbed than iron sulfate and doesn’t usually cause the gastrointestinal problems that iron sulfate does.  Using quality vitamins ensures that the nutrients you are getting are bioavailable and cost effective.

Professional-grade supplement lines are not sold in big chain retail or online stores because these manufacturers believe that proper education by licensed healthcare professionals is vital to the proper use of their product. Listed below are a few of my favorite supplement lines.
