Metabolism is the cornerstone to health and metabolic dysfunction is the known precursor to cardiovascular disease, dementia, cancer, and of course diabetes. Metabolism is a term used to encompass energy utilization, fat storage, and hormonal balance within our body. Metabolic systems however are disrupted by factors including hormonal fluctuations, lack of exercise, genetics, and exposure to certain ingredients in processed foods like high fructose corn syrup, which currently is in 73% of foods found on the grocery store shelves.
To simplify, when our metabolism falls out of balance excess fat accumulation occurs and will negatively affect our joints, brain and other organs. Poor metabolic health also reduces our energy, causes brain fog and inflammation which can lead to those previously mentioned diseases.
Of course dietary adjustments, hormone regulation, and the right kind of exercise can help, but it doesn’t always. Sometimes medications can play a role in correcting metabolic health. There are a number of oral medications out there that do work for some by addressing inflammation, suppressing appetite, and increasing satiety. Newer to the weight loss scene are peptides called GLP-1’s.
The most commonly used are semaglutide and tirzepatide though there are more. These peptides have been around for many years but were not specifically prescribed for weight loss until more recently. The interesting thing about GLP-1 agonists is that it can work as a metabolic reset. It mimics the action of your natural GLP-1 which is made in the gut and plays a key role in regulating insulin and appetite control. The goal is to create a healthier relationship with food, reduce inflammation, and balance hormones. These medications have also been shown to reduce pain but generally at a lower dosage than what is prescribed commercially.
GLP-1 medications are a game-changer for some who want to optimize their health and treat their metabolic dysfunction. It can offer health and vitality for those who have been working hard, but are not seeing the results they should. They are not a substitute for diet and exercise and patients will only see long term success if they are used in conjunction. They should also be monitored by a healthcare provider while on the medication as side effects can occur.
It’s a step in the journey towards wellness and vitality.
